Sheryl Scarborough, from the Champions and FM 1960 area, didn't know how much longer she could take it. Her son, Jack, now 17 years old, was diagnosed with epilepsy when he was 11. It was a delicate and intricate dance just getting his medications right in order to control his seizures.
"You just get so confused about what medication he's coming off of, what's being introduced, what's just regular maintenance, what he can or can't drink with it," Cheryl said.
She had a calendar in almost every room of the house to try and keep it all organized. Then about three years ago, Cheryl learned about MedPrompt, a service that reminds patients with complicated prescription schedules to take their medications, via a pager system.
Ron Moran started MedPrompt in northwest Harris County. When he first bought the business, it was a small medical chart manufacturing company.
Moran commissioned some focus groups to study medication compliance and found more than 125,000 Americans die every year from not taking their medicine properly.
As the wireless industry grew, so did MedPrompt. In 2000, Moran and his staff celebrated sending their one-millionth page.
Moran said MedPrompt is the only service he knows of that uses an alpha-numeric pager system. Other companies have similar programs that rely on the Internet, which Moran said can present a confidentiality concern.
"Also, it's more likely for a computer to go down and patients not receive their messages, rather than a pager system that relies on satellite transmission," he said.
Moran said his customers come from referrals, patients who are usually on three or more daily prescriptions. His youngest client is 3-years-old.
"People in the medical field see it as a great medical tool," Moran said. "We're not medical experts or healers. All we do is try to solve the forgetfulness problem."
